Valentina Bonizzi, who was born in Crema, Italy, but is now resident in Dundee, is an artist specialising in photography and film. She has chosen to explore a well-known but engaging narrative — that of migration, specifically emigration from Italy to other parts of Europe, including Scotland. This is a theme that has had multiple previous representations in theatre, literature and other art forms, and now finds expression at two visual art venues in the capital.

Il Gancio (meaning “the hook” ) is the title of Bonizzi’s short film exploring cultural identity, and the multiple states and meanings of the term “migrant’. The film’s name comes from a man of Italian decent, resident in Scotland, who was asked to contribute to the cost of burying
